Hey Meghan, join the Dem party
By Zbigniew Mazurak
Meghan McCain, who works a columnist for the liberal website “The Daily Beast”. She has decided to join the liberal wing of the GOP, led by David Frum and her father, in order to transform the GOP into a Dem-light party.
She has called on the GOP to remove its old commitment to a Federal Marriage Amendment and to work on legalizing same sex marriage in order to woo gays and youngsters. By doing so, she has demanded the degradation of one of the world’s oldest social institutions – marriage – to the rank of a mere contract between any two individuals.
I disapprove of that, but if Ms McCain had ended her liberal rants with that, it would’ve been only mildly harmful. Accepting same-sex marriage is a price that the GOP should be willing pay, as a last resort, for the sake of saving fiscal conservatism and defense conservatism. People such as myself have drawn up our lists of priorities, and social issues rank at the end of my list. Besides, there can be, and should be, a big Republican tent on social issues, but not on fiscal and defense issues.
Yet for McCain, legalizing same-sex marriage does not suffice. She wants the GOP to be transformed into a liberal, Dem-lite party, a clone of the party symbolized by the jackass. During her speech to the convention of Log Cabin Republicans, she rejected the notion that the GOP must re-commit itself to conservative policies in order to win elections, and demanded that the GOP become a moderately conservative party. Although she has not revealed the details of such “moderation”, I fear that she meant adopting “moderately conservative” policies across the whole spectrum of affairs, and that is unacceptable.
McCain is also ignorant of the fact that last year, her father, a moderate, ran for the Presidency and lost. He lost because the American people, whenever they face a choice between a liberal Democrat and a liberal Republican, always choose the Democrat. In other words, the GOP should allow the Dems to adopt liberal policies – they already own the liberal brand.
As stated above, McCain’s brand of moderate conservatism was offered to the American people in 2008 and rejected. The Dems won their largest electoral victory since 1964. The Dem candidate won 370 EC votes to McCain’s meagre 168, and won the popular vote by a 6% margin – 52% to 46%. States that were formerly Republican bastions, such as Virginia and North Carolina, voted for Obama. Virginia voted for a Dem for the first time since 1964. Even Florida, where there is a large, vehemently anti-communist, Cuban-American community, voted for Obama.
The Dems also won a huge majority of House seats and 59 Senate seats. In some states, such as New Mexico, they won 61% of popular votes. By any measure, Senator McCain is responsible for the GOP’s worst defeat since 1964.
